Dear guests, filmmakers, and volunteers!

Troms county is proud to be TIFFs main partner and I feal privileged to stand here tonight.

The core of this section; Film from the North is:

  • film from the north
  • about the north
  • based on our identity!

Storytelling and relationship building from the northern areas, is extra important in troubled times.

Our neighbour Russia has gone to war against another neighbouring country and the geopolitical landscape has changed greatly.

Films from the North in particular, and TIFF in general, now place even more emphasis on highlighting the Nordic community and the relationship with northern Finland and Sweden. As well as Arctic cooperation.

There for this year's opening film is The Gullspång Miracle, a Swedish-Norwegian co-production.

The film industry in our region is in a positive development. Film from the North is an important showcase - and a meeting point for; over 40 filmmakers from the Arctic who comes here to participate.

It’s record-breaking registration of feature films is impressive. And at the same time many exciting short films are produced. Not least gratifying with an increasingly strong Sami film industry, on the Norwegian side and throughout Sápmi.

Back to the opening film: a special and at the same time universal northern Norwegian story, which now comes home to Troms with its Norwegian premiere tonight.

I would also like to congratulate the film makers with the award for “Best documentary film” on the Swedish Guldbaggen last night.

We look forward to enjoying your film tonight.

I wish you all great film experiences!
